Star Liana York: Mysteries from Lost Worlds & Forgotten Dreams

DESCRIPTION

Star Liana York‘s solo show features bronze figurative sculptures ranging in size from miniature to monumental, inspired by ancient cave paintings. York infuses her sculptures with the raw power, animal strength and mystic qualities expressed in Man’s earliest art. Numerous new bronzes will be premiered at the show including a clay work in progress. Meet York at the opening reception on July 8. The show continues through July 31.

When Star Liana York moved to the Southwest in 1985, she began to come across petroglyphs and pictographs created over 1000 years ago. Intrigued by these images from disappeared cultures, her interest expanded to a passion. Soon she began researching and visiting sacred sites around the world, including the Chauvet Cavern and Lascaux cave complex of southern France, where the wall paintings and carved sculptures were carbon dated at over 30,000 years old, originating from the Paleolithic Period.

Though York has been making sculpture based on these ancient works for over 20 years, she still finds fresh ways of seeing the images and translating them into her cast bronze sculpture. York offers, “These images still resonate at a subconscious level for most of us, connecting us back to our roots in a deeply profound way…recalling for us a heightened awareness of the natural and spiritual worlds that remains in our DNA. It has been a journey for me to continue investigating, through sculpting them, what that mystery and magic is that they still possess.”

York’s accolades include selection as one of “Southwest Art’s” 30 most influential artists; Honorary Artist at The Millicent Rogers Museum Taos, NM; and recipient of the Artist Choice Award at the National Cowgirls Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, TX. Her monumental bronze sculptures are held in collections across the country including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. and Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, NM. She lives and creates on her ranch near Abiquiu, New Mexico.
