Picturing Home: Landscapes of the Southwest

DESCRIPTION

Through 30 artworks, this exhibition focuses on the history of Native American painting in the Southwest, as well as the important role of Mary B. Rogers, Millicent Rogers’ mother, in promoting the modern painting style associated with the Santa Fe Indian School. That artistic tradition — called simply “Indian painting” — includes self-taught artists such as San Ildefenso Pueblo painters Awa Tsireh, Julian Martinez, and Tonita Peña and Hopi artist Fred Kabotie, whose paintings exhibited a similar style and achieved national recognition.
