Nineteenth-century entrepreneur Fred Harvey is remembered for founding the nation’s first official hotel and restaurant chain. But Harvey was also behind yet another enduring concept: His “Indian Detours,” which promised Eastern travelers the chance to witness Native life in the Western desert, pioneered the notion of commercial cultural tourism. Led by executive director Peter Seibert, the Millicent Rogers Museum will offer history buffs a five-day tour across Arizona and western New Mexico to visit Harvey’s hotels, railroads, and tourist destinations. You might want to book a spot early, as last year's tour sold out.
