Frida Kahlo — Her Photos

DESCRIPTION

The wife of renowned Mexican muralist Diego Rivera and a famed painter in her own right, Frida Kahlo had a special affinity for another medium: photography. Her father and maternal grandfather were both professional photographers, and Kahlo herself collected, took, posed for, and decorated photographs. After her death, the images were locked away in Kahlo’s Mexico City estate, the Blue House, until they were made public in 2007. Curated by Mexican photographer and photo historian Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, the exhibition of more than 240 images demonstrates the importance of the medium in Kahlo’s life — how photographs served as work tools, memories, and a means to exorcise solitude — and includes works by Man Ray, Martin Munkácsi, and Tina Modotti.
