“Charlie and the –isms” Lecture by Hipolito Rafael Chacon

DESCRIPTION

On Tuesday, June 14 at 7 p.m., esteemed lecturer Hipolito Rafael

Chacón will deliver the illustrated talk “Charlie and the –isms” at the C.M. Russell Museum.

Charles M. Russell’s career spanned the period at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries when the art world was characterized by a dizzying array of competing art movements or “-isms.” In his lecture, Professor Chacón will address the complexity of this world and how artists in the American West such as Russell responded to it.

“Charlie was a great artist, and as such, he was not isolated from the world’s greater art community,” said Michael Duchemin, Ph.D., executive director of the C.M. Russell Museum. “He was intensely aware of how his art was perceived. He sought to educate through his art and storytelling.”

Chacón is the professor and division coordinator of art history and criticism in the school of art at the University of Montana––Missoula. He holds an A.B. in art from Wabash College and received his M.A. and Ph.D. in art history with honors from the University of Chicago.

A specialist on Renaissance and baroque art, Chacón teaches a broad range of courses on the history of art and criticism, both within and beyond the European tradition. Chacón is known as a dynamic lecturer and has designed innovative projects in his art history classes.
