After an extended international tour, the exhibition Ai Weiwei: Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads has arrived at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming. For the exhibition, renowned Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei took as his inspiration 12 bronze sculptures of Chinese zodiac creatures that once graced an elaborate Qing dynasty fountain in Yuanming Yuan, an imperial retreat in Beijing. Their heads were looted by British and French troops and later sold to international collectors; today, many people view them as a symbol of cultural theft and appropriation. Several years ago, Ai Weiwei re-created the zodiac sculptures as a subversive commentary on the nature of looting and repatriation.
