Take Five: Once again, we are celebrating and elevating films, filmmakers, and film performances of special interest to C&I readers with the C&I Movie Awards. Or as we like to call them — The Cowboys.
Last year, because of production and distribution rollbacks attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were compelled to cut back on the number of nominees in each category. For our fifth edition of
The Cowboys, however, we have expanded to include six nominees in the acting and creative categories — and upped the ante to ten for Best Picture.
For the second year, we are honoring a Best Documentary. That’s the category where you’ll find outstanding nonfiction features that focus on San Antonio high-schoolers training to be police officers and border patrol agents (At the Ready), a pair of feisty cowgirls who work as seasonal range riders for hire (Bitterbrush), an Australian-born singer determined to succeed in Nashville (I’m Wanita), the enduring appeal of The Andy Griffith Show (The Mayberry Effect), the extraordinary life and career of Tombstone star Val Kilmer (Val), and the complicated relationship shared by legendary tunesmith Guy Clark, his enigmatic wife Susanna, and singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt (Without Getting Killed or Caught).
Of course, this wouldn’t be a C&I Movie Awards celebration if C&I readers didn’t have the final word in the selection process. So we’re asking you to cast your vote for your favorite in each category.
The deadline for submitting your picks will be Wednesday, Jan. 26. Winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 28.
